Mathematical Contest in Modeling — Honorable Mention

Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) · Spring 2019 · Top 16% of 14,108 teams

At Winthrop University, two colleagues and I competed in COMAP's MCM, an international contest where teams analyze open-ended problems and present solutions. We selected Problem C, The Opioid Crisis (Big Data). After applying machine learning to the provided dataset, we identified several correlations—including a relationship between opioid cases and the percentage of children under 18 living with grandparents—and produced a 25‑page report forecasting a slight near‑term decline.

We received an Honorable Mention—the second team from Winthrop University to place this high.
